GREENSBORO, N.C. – Katie Lewis recorded a game-high 18 points as the Greensboro College women's basketball team overcame a six-point first period deficit to defeat the Quakers of Guilford College Saturday, 64-53.
With the Quakers holding on to a 9-3 lead with 6:21 left in the first period, Greensboro was able to use a 8-2 run to tie the game at 11 with 3:36 on the clock, following a pair of free throws by Lewis who started the run with her second three-pointer of the afternoon.
Following the Pride run, Guilford went on a run of their own to take a 16-11 lead before
Lauren Jenkins and
Shaiajah Dailey combined for four points over the next two possessions to pull Greensboro back to within one point.
The Quakers then extended their lead back to three points just before the end of the period, but Greensboro was able to battle back to tie the game at 20 just four minutes into the second after
Nichelle Jeffries hit two free throws after drawing a foul on Guilford's Julie Carini.
Over the remainder of the half, Guilford would once again pull out to a five-point lead but the Pride pulled back to within two heading into the break.
Despite struggling to maintain a lead in the first half, the Pride offense began to click on all cylinders to open the second half as Lewis and Dailey combined for six points to give Greensboro their largest lead of the game at 34-30.
However, Guilford was once again able to battle back to take a 38-35 lead before the Pride took the lead for good at 39-38, following a jumper by
A'Liyah Woods.
After taking a three-point lead into the final period, the Pride quickly blew the game open with a 19-3 run over the first six minutes, establishing their largest lead of the contest at 60-44.
Woods sparked the Greensboro run with five points on two baskets, while
Ashley Free and
Brianna Best combined for eight points.
Once they established the 16-point lead, the Pride did not look back as was able to hold on for the 11-point victory.
"After struggling in the first half, we were able to start doing what we had talked about doing prior to the game and played harder in the second half, which allowed us to pick up the win," Head Coach
Randy Tuggle said. "We have to come back out tomorrow and do what we came to do from the start against a very good Virginia Wesleyan team."
Woods finished the day with a double double of 14 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds, while Best finished with seven points and six rebounds. Dailey, Jenkins, and Free combined for 16 points.
The Pride women will return to action at 12 p.m. Sunday when they take on the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan University to close out the 2018 Daly 7 Classic, hosted by Guilford College.
