Men's Soccer Falls Late To No. 21 Christopher Newport

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 21 Christopher Newport University Thursday, 2-1.

Both teams played the first half to a scoreless draw despite having opportunities to score.

The Pride then got on the board first in the 49th minute to take a one-goal lead.

Jordy Briceno played a ball from the right side of the 18-yard box and found the foot of Carlos Barragan. Barragan was then able to strike the ball with his right foot and place the ball in the lower left-hand corner of the goal for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Greensboro was then able to maintain their lead for the next 27 minutes before the Captains were able to find the equalizer.

CNU then scored the game's final goal in the 81st minute of play despite constant pressure from the Greensboro front line.

"Both teams fought very hard today but we unfortunately we came out on the wrong side of the result," Head Coach Tony Falvino said. "I think both teams were feeling each other out in the first half but we came out in the second half and was able to execute, which resulted in us taking the lead. I thought at that point we had the opportunity to move the ball better and keep possession. The game was physical and unfortunately we were not able to keep them at bay as they pushed a lot of number forward.

"I believe the red card was huge momentum swing in their favor and they capitalized. I am very proud of the fight the boys showed after we went to 10 men. There was plenty of positives we can take away with a young team.  We need to continue to work towards believing in the process and maturing."

Jaime Payamps took the loss in goal for Greensboro despite recording three saves.

The Pride men's soccer team will return to action at 4 p.m. Saturday when they travel to USA South foe LaGrange College. For more information on Greensboro College men's soccer, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
