Baseball Falls To Virginia Wesleyan In Non-Conference Tilt

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team fell to the Marlins of Virginia in non-conference play Tuesday, 18-3.

The Marlins took an 8-0 lead into the bottom half of the fifth inning when the Pride got on the board with one run.

Dallas Ducote led off the inning with a single to center field before advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch.

Ducote then came in to score on a Brandon Soden single to center field.

After Virginia Wesleyan extended their lead to 18-1 over the next three innings, Greensboro plated XXX runs in the eighth inning to pull within 18-3.

Matthew Denham singled with one out before reaching second base on a Cameron Peters single to right field.

After Derek Jaar was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Denham came in to score on a wild pitch before Peters came in to score on a Braedon Jewett sacrifice fly.

Greensboro then got a runner on base in the ninth inning but could not push another run across.

"Today was not a very good day for our program," Head Coach Frank Maldonado said. "Things that we preach on a daily basis was not showed today but I know they guys are working hard.

"Baseball is a grind and you have to play hard from the first pitch to the last. We will get back to practice tomorrow and prepare of our upcoming conference series with Ferrum. Our goal still remains the same as we want to compete and make it to the conference tournament."

Soden, Ducote, and Efird had a team-high two hits each, while three other players had one hit each. Willis Booth was credited with the loss, while Drew Paice, Hunter Curtis, Andrew Ray, and Hunter Wolfington also saw time on the mound.

The Pride will return to action 5 p.m. Friday when they open a three-game USA South Athletic Conference series at Ferrum. For more information on Greensboro College baseball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
