ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team opened a three-game conference set against North Carolina Wesleyan College Friday with a 4-3 victory in extra innings.
Greensboro (16-7, 4-3 USA South) got on the board first in the top half of the second inning after
Jimmy Short, who led off the inning with a triple to center field, came in to score on a
Adam Murray groundout.
The Bishops (16-9, 7-3 USA South) were then able to score two runs in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead.
Neither team was able to push another run across the plate until Greensboro tied the game in the sixth inning following an RBI single by
Derek Jaar to center field.
However, Wesleyan quickly regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning with one run before Greensboro was able to send the game into extra innings with one run in the eighth inning.
After both teams were unable to take advantage of scoring opportunities in the 10
th inning, Greensboro finally broke through for the game's deciding run in the 11
th inning.
Tim Osborne and
Jacob Rodriguez led off the inning with singles before Rodriguez was forced out on a Short fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with one out.
Following the Short fielder's choice,
Adam Murray hit a fielder's choice of his own to score Osborne from third base to give Greensboro the one-run advantage.
In the bottom half of the inning,
Willis Booth made quick work of the Bishops to secure the victory and pick up his fourth win of the season.
Zach Neumeister had a team-high two hits, while
Brady Dignan, Jaar, Osborne, Rodriguez, Short, Murray, and
Hunter Curtis combined for seven hits.
Piero Amador pitched the first 5 1/3 innings for Greensboro before giving way to Booth who pitched the final 5 1/3 innings.
