Late Push Not Enough As Pride Men Fall To Averett

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men's basketball team fell to Averett University Sunday, 70-67.

Greensboro quickly raced out to a 17-7 lead just seven minutes into the contest. Joseph Gatling hit a pair of three-pointers to open the game before Lorenzo Marry hit a layup from the right side of the lane. Christopher Corbin then added four points, while Darus Maddox hit a three-pointer from the left wing.

After Greensboro established the lead, the Cougars offense began to hit as they rallied back to take a 26-23 lead.

Averett was then used a 16-8 run to take a 42-31 halftime lead.

"We were not engaged for the full 20 minutes in the first half that led to the Averett run," Head Coach Bryan Galuski said. "We just did not have good offensive possessions over the final 10 minutes and we let our emotions get the best of us."

The Cougars were able to maintain their advantage for the first 17 minutes of the final period until Hamilton Hawkins capped off a 23-11 run to give the Pride a 63-62 lead with just under four minutes to play.

Greensboro then established a five-point advantage following another Hawkins layup before the Cougars took a 70-67 lead with 19 seconds remaining.

The Pride had a shot with 1.3 seconds on the clock to tie the game, but Gatling's three-pointer rimmed out to end the game.

"We had to have more energy and more fight if we were going to win this game today," Galuski added. "We need our guys to play more consistent for a full 40 minutes. Even though we have some runs, the guys have not brought that same intensity for a full game here lately.

"We gave ourselves chances in the second half but we are not excellent enough right now to close out a game. If we want to do anything, we have got to change things as a team by playing with more passion while keeping our emotions in check."

Gatling scored a team-high 17 points, while Maddox finished with 16 points. Marry and Corbin had 10 points each, while Marry also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

The Pride men will return to action 2 p.m. Saturday when they travel to LaGrange College. For more information on Greensboro College men's basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
