DANVILLE, Va. – The Greensboro College women's basketball season came to an end Sunday with a 58-56 loss to No. 2 East-seeded Averett University in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.
Greensboro took an early 3-0 lead following a Rashieka Gregory jumper before the Cougars used a 15-0 run over the next five minutes to establish a 12-point advantage.
After trading baskets for the next seven minutes of play, the Pride used a 10-4 run to pull within 25-19 with one minute remaining until halftime.
Domonique McCoy and
Shamara Richardson each had three points during the stretch, while
Katie Lewis and
Tyreka Nicholson combined for four points.
Averett was then able to close out the half on a 7-1 run to take a 10-point lead into halftime.
Neither team was able to put a run together over the third period as both teams tallied 13 points before Greensboro started chipping away at the Cougars advantage with 7:25 to play in the contest.
Averett regained a 12-point advantage following a free throw by Alixis Roccia before Greensboro used a 7-0 run to pull within 47-42 with 6 minutes showing on the clock.
Kamerin Williams started the run with a pair of free throws before
Katie Lewis hit a jumper from the right elbow. Williams then capped off the run with her second made field-goal of the game.
The Cougars then regained their double digit advantage but the Pride did not quit and was able to use a 12-2 run over the next 3 minutes to tie the game at 54.
Monica Smalls fueled the run with seven points, while Lewis accounted for the other five points.
After trading baskets on consecutive possessions, Averett hit a pair of free throws with seven to secure the two-point victory despite a last chance opportunity by the Pride.
"I really hate the season ended the way it did," Head Coach
Randy Tuggle said. "We played good late but we came up just short in the end.
"I also really hate it for our two seniors as they played their hearts out for the entire game."
Smalls finished with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds, while Lewis tallied 12 points. Gregory and Williams also pulled down nine rebounds.
Marla Crawford finished with three assists.
