GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men's basketball team honored five seniors on Saturday before defeating the Panthers of Ferrum College, 81-67.
Seniors
Alvin Cunningham Jr.,
Christopher Corbin,
Donavan Griffith,
Hamilton Hawkins, and
Lorenzo Marry were all honored before the start of the game.
The Pride (14-10, 8-6) jumped out to an early 10-2 lead just over four minutes into the contest.
Darus Maddox made two free throws to spark the run before Corbin recorded a layup in the paint. Griffith then capped off the run with a pair of three-pointers.
The Panthers were then as able to establish some momentum to pull within 16-13 heading into the under-12 media timeout.
After Ferrum took a 23-20 lead,
Demetrius Tilley hit his first three-pointer of the season to tie the game with 6:49 remaining before halftime.
On the Pride's ensuing possession, Maddox hit a three-pointer of his own before Tilley gave Greensboro a six-point advantage with 4:25 to play in the half.
The Pride then used an 8-2 run to take a 37-28 halftime lead. Griffith scored six points during the rally, while Corbin and Maddox each contributed one point each
Ferrum then used a 23-11 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to take their lone lead of the half at 55-54.
However, Greensboro was able to outlast the Panthers as they used a 25-12 run of their own to secure the victory. Maddox tallied 12 points down the stretch, while
Hamilton Hawkins, Corbin, Griffith, and Tilley combined for 13 points.
Greensboro also out rebounded the Panthers 44-26.
"We found ways to win as we grinded and came out on top", Head Coach
Bryan Galuski said. "It was certainly was a team effort.
"I thought we did a really good job with activity and being around the ball. I think you have to be versatile this time of the year".
Maddox led the Pride with 26 points, including a team-high four three-pointers, while Griffith tallied a double double in his final game in Hanes Gymnasium with 24 points and 16 rebounds while also dishing out four assists. Fellow senior
Christopher Corbin added 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists as well.
