DANVILLE, Va. – The 2016-2017 Greensboro College men's basketball season came to an end Thursday as the Pride men's basketball team fell to the second-seeded Monarchs of Methodist University in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals, 93-75.
The two teams traded the first four buckets of the contest before Methodist went on a 23-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a 27-6 lead.
Greensboro then went on an 8-2 run of their own to pull within a 15-point deficit.
Matteo Baggio fueled the run with four points, while
Cornelius Johnson and
Darus Maddox had two points each.
However, Methodist was able to outscore Greensboro by 10 points over the final nine minutes of the half to take a 60-35 lead into halftime.
Methodist was then able to establish their largest lead of the game at 72-40 before the Pride used a 20-6 run over a seven minute span to pull within 18 points at 78-60.
Javen Garrison started the run with a layup before
Donavan Griffith tallied nine points.
Joseph Gatling,
Christopher Corbin, and
Demetrius Tilley combined for nine points.
Greensboro would then pull to within 14 points with 1:48 remaining following a Corbin three-pointer but could not get any closer.
"We struggled right out of the gate and Methodist took advantage of it," Head Coach
Bryan Galuski said. "After struggling in the first half, we knew that we had to play more physical in the second half but in the end it just wasn't enough.
"The hard thing about the loss is that there is no tomorrow. The senior class gave us a lot throughout their careers at Greensboro College and they will be missed."
Corbin and Griffith each finished with a team-high 14 points, while Baggio had 11 points.
Lorenzo Marry tallied nine points and four rebounds, while Tilley pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Hamilton Hawkins, Gatling, Griffith, and Corbin combined for 11 assists.
