GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Greensboro College men's soccer team stunned the Scots of Covenant College in double overtime Friday, 3-2.
Â
Covenant struck early in the first half when the Scots' midfielder placed the ball in the bottom left corner of the goal in the 6
th minute.
Â
The Pride did not wait long to answer back.
Â
Seven minutes later,
Carlos Barragan was set up for a penalty kick and booted it right over the goalie's fingertips to tie the game at one goal apiece.
Â
As time dwindled down in the first half, Greensboro struggled to capitalize on their opportunities and went into the halftime break tied at one.
Â
The tie then held until the beginning of the second half when Covenant recorded a header off a free kick to put the Scots on top, 2-1.
Â
With the Pride now facing the time clock, Greensboro continued to apply pressure on the Covenant defense but was unable to find the equalizer until Gerardo Perazza took a feed from Barragan and slotted it in the upper right hand corner of the goal.
Â
Following Perazza's goal, time expired with the game tied at two, forcing the game into overtime.
Â
The two teams then played the first 10 minutes of overtime to a scoreless draw, but
Jacob Owens lifted Greensboro to the one-goal victory with his second goal of the season just two-minutes into the second overtime.
Â
"I think we came out a little too lethargic today which is disappointing as we still have a lot to play for," Head Coach
Tony Falvino said. "As a group we allowed Covenant to find a way into the game and they are a hard team to play against as they go hard all the time. We had some players really step up today and lead by example.
Â
"We did not capitalize on some really good opportunities but the guys showed a lot of character to battle back from behind in win in double overtime. We have to rest and re-hydrate properly tonight as we have another tough opponent in Maryville tomorrow."
Â
Greensboro outshot the Scots 20-4, while also holding a 3-1 corner kick advantage. Kalen Kohut recorded one save and was credited with the win.
Â
The Pride men will return to action Saturday when they host the Scots of Maryville College at 4 p.m. For more information on Greensboro College men's soccer continue to follow
