Pride Men Slam Hawks In USA South Action

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Donavan Griffith scored 12 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds as the Greensboro College men's basketball team defeated the Hawks of Huntingdon College Saturday, 89-73.

Greensboro held a one-point lead six minutes into the contest before Griffith sparked a 17-3 run with an alley-oop dunk off a feed from Joseph Gatling. Following a free throw by Cornelius Johnson, Griffith slammed down another one following a steal on the defensive end of the court.

As the Pride run progressed, Hamilton Hawkins scored his second basket of the game before Darus Maddox recorded a dunk of his own to cap off the spurt.

Greensboro was then able to maintain its double-digit advantage for the next four minutes before using a 6-2 run over the final two minutes of the first half to take a 41-30 halftime lead.

After Huntingdon pulled to within eight early in the second half, Greensboro was then able extended their margin to 51-35 following a 10-2 run that lasted over three minutes. Gatling jump started the run with a long three-pointer before Maddox connected from long range with a Hawks defender in his face.

The Pride was then able to establish their largest lead of the game at 80-58 with just over five minutes to play following another alley-oop dunk. This time it was Matteo Baggio on the receiving end of a Gatling feed.

Huntingdon would get no closer than 14 over the final five minutes as Greensboro was able to record the 16 point victory.

"It was a good win today after coming off a tough loss Wednesday," Head Coach Bryan Galuski said. "Everyone that stepped on the floor today contributed in some way. I thought that we had some positive moments and some not so positive moments on both ends of the court.

"We are in a good spot as a team right now but we have a lot of basketball still to be played."

Gatling finished the day with a team-high 16 points, while Maddox (13) and Dominic Fumbanks (10) also recorded double figures scoring. Hawkins, who contributed seven points and nine rebounds, led to Pride offensive attack with eight assists.

The Pride men will return to action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when they host Methodist University. For more information on Greensboro College men's basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
