GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men's basketball team fell to Methodist University in overtime Wednesday, 92-90.
Neither team was able to gain an edge over the first 13-minutes of the game until the Pride's
Joseph Gatling caught fire from the field.
With Greensboro trailing by one-point, Gatling hit a floating jumper to give the Pride a 22-21 lead before extending the margin to three points on the next possession. Gatling then went on to score five-unanswered point to push the Greensboro lead to 29-21 with 6:08 showing on the first half clock.
However, the Monarchs battled back to even the score at 37 before
Cornelius Johnson threw down a two-handed dunk to give Greensboro a 39-37 halftime lead.
Methodist quickly regained an edge in the second half before pulling away to establish their largest lead of the game at 67-58 with nine minutes left in regulation.
However, this time Greensboro battled back to regain the lead following a 13-0 run. Gatling, who finished with a team-high 28 points, hit three three-pointers during the spurt, while
Darus Maddox hit two three-pointers including a rare four-point play.
Neither team would get an advantage larger than two-points over the last five minutes, but Johnson hit a free throw with 1:36 showing on the clock to send the game into overtime.
Methodist quickly jumped out to an 85-81 lead in the extra stanza before Greensboro pulled within 87-86 following a Maddox jumper from the right elbow.
Despite a strong effort over the final 2 minutes, Greensboro fell by a two-point margin.
"It was a good college basketball game tonight that didn't go our way in the end," Associate Head Coach
Jim Cantamessa said. "I give credit to Methodist for making plays when they had to. We are going to get back at it and get ready for two tough conference games this weekend."
Donavan Griffith finished with 17 points, while Maddox tallied 14. Johnson finished with nine points. Griffith also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Christopher Corbin paced the Greensboro offense with five assists.
