Pride Men Top Pacers In Battle of Conference Leaders

RALEIGH, N.C. – Darus Maddox scored a career-high 27 points Sunday as the Greensboro College men's basketball team took sole possession of the USA South Athletic Conference lead with a 100-97 victory over the Pacers of William Peace University.

Greensboro (11-5, 5-1 USA South) took an early four-point lead before the Pacers used a 10-3 run to gain a 10-7 lead.

The Pride regained a three-point advantage with a 6-0 run. Christopher Corbin accounted for four points during the run, while Maddox tallied the remaining two.

After Greensboro regained the lead, William Peace battled back to take a 36-34 lead before the Pride established a 42-39 advantage following a 8-3 run. Joseph Gatling recorded six of his 15 points during the streak, while Donavan Griffith capped the run with his fourth basket.

The Pacers regained the lead, but the Pride took a 52-49 lead into halftime, aided by a 10-5 run over the final three minutes.

Greensboro started slow in the second half as the Pacers regained a one-point advantage before Greensboro scored 10 straight points to go up 66-57. Griffith sparked the big run with a backdoor dunk off an assist by Lorenzo Marry before Maddox capped it off.

The Pride kept the lead, despite constant pressure for the Pacers offensive, to secure the three-point victory.

"I am really proud of the guys for staying focused this entire weekend," Head Coach Bryan Galuski said. "We had a number of players contribute in both games, while making big defensive stops.

"Darus was really big down the stretch today as he was able to maintain his focus down the stretch in pressure situations. Our team continues to move in the right direction, and we can see what is ahead of us. However, we have got to take it one game at a time."

Griffith finished the game with 19 points, while Christopher Corbin added 18 points. Cornelius Johnson tallied 10 points while passing for a team-high four assists. Griffith and Marry each had a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Pride men will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ferrum College. For more information on Greensboro College men's basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
