GREENSBORO, N.C.—The Greensboro College softball team swept a USA South Athletic Conference double-header Saturday against the Hawks of Huntingdon College.
The Pride (17-11, 6-6 USA South) won Game 1 in walk-off fashion, 1-0, before taking Game 2, 4-3.
Greensboro's
Dawn Harris and Huntingdon's Raina Lanier squared off in a pitching duel in Game 1, but
Alexis Hall doubled home
Mandi Ballard from second base to win the game in the seventh inning.
The two pitchers allowed only eight hits combined in the game.
Kali Puckett,
Allyson Yeager,
Sarah Tompkins, and Hall each had one hit for the Pride.
Dawn Harris pitched the full seven innings and picked up her eighth win of the season.
After not scoring until the final inning of Game 1, Greensboro tallied one run in the second inning of Game 2 to take a 1-0 lead. Following a walk by Ballard to load the bases in the inning, Nicole Wallace plated Brittany Rush from third base with an infield single.
The Pride then added to its advantage with three runs in the third inning.
Sarah Tompkins drove in Yeager with a double to right field before coming in to score on a Hawks' passed ball. Three batters later,
Madison Crisco reached safely on a Hawks error that allowed
Sarah Connolly to score the Pride's final run.
Huntingdon pulled to within 4-3 late in the game, but the Pride defense held strong to secure the two-game sweep.
Tompkins, Yeager, and Rush each had two hits, while Hall and Wallace each tallied one hit.
Maddy Wetherholt picked up the win for Greensboro.
"We were able to play sound defense and make the routine plays today," Interim Head Coach
Denzel Wallace said. "We were able to get the timely plays when we needed them, and our pitching did a great job of keeping the hitters off-balance."
The Pride will return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when they travel to Covenant College. For more information on Greensboro College softball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
