GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maddy Wetherholt pitched her first career shutout as the Pride softball team split a double-header with Roanoke College Sunday.
The Pride (2-2) fell in the first contest, 11-4, before taking Game 2, 1-0.
The Maroons (1-1) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first game before the Pride tied it in the bottom of the first.
Sarah Connolly and
Madison Crisco each singled with two outs before coming around to score on a double by
Allyson Yeager.
Roanoke regained the lead at 5-4 before Greensboro plated its final two runs of the game in the third inning.
Kali Puckett reached on a Maroons error to start the inning before coming home on a Brittany Rush triple to right field. Two batters later, Yeager hit her second extra-base hit to score Rush from third.
The Maroons then scored six unanswered runs to win the game.
The Pride recorded seven hits in the game. Rush and Yeager each recorded two hits, while Crisco, Connolly, and Nicole Wallace each had one hit.
Dawn Harris (0-1) started before giving way to Wetherholt.
In the second game, the Pride scored the game's lone run in the third inning when
Alexis Hall stole home on a double steal.
Mandi Ballard, Rush, and Connolly accounted for Greensboro's three hits. Wetherholt, who went the distance, recorded four strikeouts while issuing only two walks.
"The team did a great job responding back from the first game," Head Coach
Becky Bishop said. "Maddy [Wetherholt] came in and pitched an outstanding game for us, while also playing strong defense."
