Softball Sweeps Day One Of Grand Slam Classic

CARY, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team swept its opening day of the 2016 Grand Slam Triangle Classic Saturday.
 
Greensboro defeated McDaniel College 8-4 to open the day before topping New York University 4-2.
 
McDaniel (0-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Pride (4-2) scored eight unanswered runs to secure the victory.  Allyson Yeager, Sarah Tompkins, and Nicole Wallace each recorded RBI hits.
 
Tompkins, who recorded two extra-base hits, tallied a team-high three hits, while Kali Puckett, Madison Crisco, Sarah Connolly, Brittany Rush, Alexis Hall, Yeager, and Wallace each had one hit.
 
Dawn Harris pitched the entire seven innings to pick up her first win of the season, recording seven strikeouts.
 
In the second game, the Wolves took a 1-0 lead before Sarah Tompkins plated Brittany Rush to even the score.
 
However, NYU regained its one-run advantage following a Claire Stefaneilli single.
 
After falling behind once again, Crisco came in to score on a wild pitch, following a Connolly walk.
 
Wallace put Greensboro on top 3-2 with an RBI single before Connolly blasted a solo shot over the left-center field fence for the final run of the game.
 
Crisco, Tompkins, and Wallace each recorded a team-high two hits.
 
Maddy Wetherholt tossed her third fourth complete game of the season to pick up the win. She finished the game with four strikeouts.
 
The Pride softball team will return to action Sunday for the final day of the classic. Greensboro will square off with Salem at 10 a.m. before taking on Berry College at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Bond Metro Park in Cary, N.C.
