FARMVILLE, Va. – Pitcher
Dustin Minnick tossed six strong innings, as the Pride baseball team opened the Floyd Wilcox Tournament, hosted by Hampden-Sydney College, Friday, with a victory over Wesley College, 5-1.
Greensboro (2-5) broke the scoreless tie with one run in the top half of the fifth inning.
Brandon Soden led off the inning with walk before coming in to score on a
Braedon Jewett fielder's choice.
The Pride struck again with two runs in the seventh inning, extending its margin to 3-0. Following another Soden walk,
Adam Murray laced a triple to plate the game's second run before Jewett picked up his second RBI.
Greensboro then added another run in the eighth inning, before the Wolfs (0-1) broke up the shutout with one run in the bottom half of the inning.
However, the Pride was able to push one last run across following an
Aaron Brown sacrifice fly.
Brian Robbett, who started the game behind the plate, sat Wesley down quickly in the final half inning to secure the victory.
Mac Graham and Daniel Efrid each recorded multiple hits, while
Edward Mililan,
James Wilkins, Jewett, and Murray each tallied one hit. Minnick (1-1) recorded three strikeouts in his six innings of work, while surrendering only four hits.
The Pride will return for day two of the Floyd Wilcox Tournament Saturday. Greensboro takes the field at 11 a.m. against the host Tigers before squaring off with Wesley at 3 p.m. For more information on Pride baseball, continue to follow
