LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Greensboro College softball team opened its 2016 season with a double-header at Randolph College Friday.
The Pride (1-1) dropped the first game 11-3 before taking the second game 11-10.
The Wildcats (1-1) took a 5-0 lead into the third inning of the first game.
In the top half of the third inning, Brittany Rush laced her first extra-base hit of the afternoon to left field with one out. Three batters later, Rush scored from third base following a
Sarah Connolly pop out.
Randolph then added three more runs to go ahead 8-1 before Greensboro plated two runs in the fifth inning to pull within 8-3.
Rush led off the inning with her second hit before advancing to third on a Maddison Crisco infield single. Two batters after Rush scored on a passed ball,
Sarah Tompkins plated Crisco with a RBI single to score the Pride's final run of the contest.
Allyson Yeager, Rush, Crisco, and Tompkins combined for Greensboro's five hits.
Maddy Wetherholt took this loss after tossing the entire six innings.
The Pride then jumped out to a fast 3-0 lead in game two. Yeager roped a 2 RBI double to left center before coming around to score following a Tompkins single.
However, Randolph came back to score the next five runs, taking a 5-3 lead.
Greensboro then regained the lead following a three-run fifth inning before extending their margin to 10-5, with four runs in the sixth inning. Tompkins picked up four RBIs during the seven run span, while Yeager and Crisco accounted for one RBI each.
The Pride was not able to hold its lead as the Wildcats tied the game at 10 with five runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh inning the Greensboro bats came through once again.
Alexis Hall led off the inning with an infield single before advancing into scoring position following a
Kali Puckett ground out. Rush then came through once more, giving the Pride an 11-10 lead, with a bullet off the center field wall.
Weatherholt, who picked up her first collegiate win, shut Randolph down in the bottom half of the inning to secure the one run victory.
Greensboro recorded 17 hits in the game. Rush recorded a team-high four hits, while Tompkins tallied three hits. Tompkins had a team-high 5 RBIs.
