Pride Women Knock Off Unbeaten Lions

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College women's basketball team knocked Piedmont College from the unbeaten conference ranks Sunday with a 67-65 win.
 
The Pride (13-8, 9-3 USA South) trailed by 18 with seven minutes left in the second period, but pulled to within 37-29 heading into halftime after a 10-0 run. Following a Marla Crawford layup, Monica Smalls scored the next five points before Alexis Hite capped off the run with a three-pointer as time expired in the second period.
 
The Lions (18-5, 13-1 USA South) scored the first three points of the third period before Greensboro used a 16-6 spurt to pull within 46-45. Hite accounted for five points over the seven-minute span, while Kamerin Williams, Domonique McCoy, Heather Burton, Courtney Pearsall, Da Jah Joyner, and Smalls combined for the rest.
 
The Pride briefly tied the game at 56 before Mary Kate Rushton put Piedmont back in front by three.
 
However, Greensboro ran off a 9-1 run to establish its largest lead at 64-57. Four players scored during the run.
 
The Lions had an opportunity to tie the game in the final seconds but the Pride defense held strong to secure the victory.
 
"I am very proud of my team today as they kept fighting and never gave up," Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. "We made some big steps this weekend and capped it off with a big win against a very good team."
 
Smalls finished with a team-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. Hite contributed 18 points, while Pearsall and Williams each tallied 6 points. Crawford dished out a team-high 4 assists.
