Pride Women Drop Regular Season Opener At Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College women's basketball team dropped its season opener Tuesday to Guilford College, 70-56.

Greensboro (0-1) opened the game on a 5-0 run before Guilford (1-0) came back to tie the game at seven with 2:46 to play in the first period. Rasheika Gregory got the opening run started for the Pride before Monica Smalls capped it off with an old fashion three-point play.

After the Quakers tied the game, Greensboro took a narrow lead at the end of the first period following a layup by Courtney Pearsall.

However, Guilford outscored Greensboro 25-7 in the second period to take a 16-point halftime lead.

Greensboro would get no closer than 11 points for the remainder of the contest, falling by the 14-point margin.

"I think we started the game with a lot of energy tonight but some key players got into foul trouble early," Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. "Our subs were not able to keep the energy going and Guilford was able to capitalize on that.

"The good thing about tonight was we found some players that gave us everything, while we had some that didn't and we learned from that. I think that Katie and Rasheika had good games for us, and we are looking forward to find others who will pick up the pace."

Katie Lewis tallied a team-high 17 points on 7 of 13 shooting, while Gregory finished with 14 points. Kylee Barry, Smalls, Pearsall, Marla Crawford, Kamerin Williams, and Shamara Richardson combined for the other 25 points. Pearsall and Smalls each had a team-high eight rebounds.

The Pride women will return to the hardwood at 8 p.m. Friday when they travel to Randolph-Macon College to take on the Hornet of Lyncburg College in a neutral site contest.  For more information on Greensboro College women's basketball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
