ROANOKE, Va. – The Greensboro College volleyball team spilt its final non-conference matchups of the season Saturday at Hollins University.
The Pride (18-10) fell in straight sets to Virginia Wesleyan before defeating Hollins, 3-2.
Emily Horn gave Greensboro a 5-4 lead in Set 1 before the Pride used a 7-0 run to take an 11-4 lead.
Meredith Summers recorded two kills during the run, while
Katie Clark tallied two service aces.
However, the Marlins used a run of their own to take a 19-18 lead before winning the set 25-24.
Virginia Wesleyan went on to win the next two sets by scores of 26-24 and 25-23.
Horn finished the match with a team-high nine kills, while
Shayla Moss and Summers combined for 12 kills.
Darrian Bolt recorded 16 assists in the match, while
Tori Belcher paced the Greensboro defense with 14 digs.
After dropping its opening match of the day to the Marlins, Greensboro rebounded quickly to win Set 1 against Hollins 25-14 before taking a 2-0 lead in the match following a 25-19 Set 2 win.
Greensboro struggled to keep its offense going in the next two sets, as Hollins evened the match at two, forcing a decisive fifth set.
With the score deadlocked at 3 in the decisive set, the Pride opened a 9-3 advantage following a 6-0 run.
Samantha Kirschner started the run for Greensboro before
Brandy Johnson capped it with a kill of her own.
The Pride closed out the match with a 15-7 win.
Summers and Johnson each finished with a team-high 11 kills.
Evan Sherer, Johnson, and Kirschner combined for 12 blocks.
"Today proved to be tough on many levels," Head Coach
Kaci Pike said. "I was proud of our defensive effort in the first match. I was also glad we were able to come out swinging in the second match. The win today was truly a team effort."
