Volleyball Stays Hot With Two More Conference Victories

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College volleyball team continued its strong play of late by picking up two more USA South Athletic Conference victories Sunday.

The Pride (14-6, 6-2 USA South) defeated the Hawks of Huntingdon College in straight sets before topping the Panthers of LaGrange College, 3-1.

Huntingdon (6-16, 2-7 USA South) held an 8-6 lead in Set 1 before Greensboro raced out in front 13-8, following a 7-0 run. Darrian Bolt recorded two of her team-high three service aces during the stretch, while Evan Sherer and Emily Horn added one kills.

Greensboro did not let the Hawks get any closer than four points for the remainder of the set, taking a 1-0 match lead after winning 25-18.

The Pride continued its strong play in Set 2 as they quickly opened up a 17-6 lead before forcing the Hawks into a must win Set 3 by winning 25-15. Brandy Johnson, Shayla Moss, Meredith Summers, Horn, and Sherer each had at least one kill during the opening run, while Tori Belcher tallied one service ace.

Huntingdon then put the pressure on the Pride in Set 3 but Greensboro rallied back from two points down late to win the match 3-0, following a 26-24 victory.

"I was really happy with the way our girls came out today after a long day yesterday," Head Coach Kaci Pike said.

Johnson finished the match with a team-high 10 kills, while Horn (9) and Sherer (8) combined for 17 kills.  Katie Clark finished with 20 assists, while Belcher paced the defense with 13 digs.

Following its victory over the Hawks, Greensboro defeated LaGrange College by scores of 26-24, 26-28, 25-17, and 25-16.

The Panthers (13-9, 3-5 USA South) took an early Set 1 lead, but Greensboro used a 7-0 spurt, aided by three LaGrange attacking errors, to take an 8-3 lead.

After LaGrange came back to take a 9-8 lead, the Pride outscored the Panthers 8-2 over the next 10 points to regain a five point lead at 16-11 before going on to win 26-24, taking a 1-0 lead.

Despite using another large run to gain a 22-20 Set 2 lead, Greensboro fell by a 28-26 score to even the match at one.

The two teams then traded points back-and-forth over the final two sets, but the Pride was able to secure the victory.

Johnson once again led Greensboro in kills with 15, while Moss and Horn also recorded double-digit kills. Bolt, who had a team-high 29 assists, combined for 54 assists with Clark.

"This was a great weekend for the girls as they proved to be up to the challenge of another big weekend with four matches in two days," Pike said. "It is really nice to see all our hard work paying off with everyone contributing in their own ways."

The Pride will return to Mayo C. Harlow Memorial Court at 7 p.m. Wed. when they welcome the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin University to town. For more information on Greensboro College volleyball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
