LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Greensboro College women's basketball team defeated the Scots of Covenant College in a USA South Athletic Conference clash Friday, 60-55.
After trading baskets to open the contest, Greensboro (10-6, 6-1 USA South) went on a 13-0 run to take a 17-6 lead 15 seconds into the second period.
Shamara Richardson started the Pride's run with a pair of free throws before
Marla Crawford added four points.
Bryanna Stanton and
Kamerin Williams also tallied points during the spurt.
The Scots (5-10, 3-5) then pulled to within 33-27 heading into the break.
In the first three minutes of the third segment, Greensboro extended its lead to 40-27 following another big run.
Alexis Hite jumpstarted the run for the Pride with a long three-pointer before
Jada Peterson capped it off with a floater in the lane.
Once Greensboro re-established its double-digit lead, Covenant would get no closer than five for the remainder of the contest.
"We thought that we were pretty bad offensively tonight," Assistant Coach
Jennifer King said. "On the defensive side of the ball we created a lot of turnovers and that is what kept us in the game. We will take this win and just go with it, but we have to play better to move on in this conference.
"We only got 53 shots up, and we have to do a better job of getting more shots. The coaching staff told the team that they have to quickly put this game behind them as we have another game in less than 24 hours. In the morning, we will go over the scout of Maryville in our shootaround and hopefully come out better on both sides of the ball."
Crawford finished with a team-high 13 points, while Hite chipped in 11 points. Peterson,
Monica Smalls, and Richardson each recorded six points. Crawford also pulled down a team-high six rebounds and dished out four assists.
Aleigha Williams paced Covenant with a career-high 28 points and was the lone Scot to score in double figures.
The Pride women will return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when they clash with the nationally-ranked Scots of Maryville College. Greensboro has won the past two meetings against the Scots, including last season's USA South Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game.
