GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men's basketball team used a strong second half to top the Monarch of Methodist University Wednesday, 65-58.
Greensboro (8-6, 2-1 USA South) quickly jumped in front on a three-pointer by
Zedric Barnett before the Monarchs (4-10, 0-3 USA South) pulled out to a 6-3 lead.
Methodist then held its narrow advantage until the 7:40 mark, when
Trevin Miller connected from long range to tie the game at 18. Methodist was able to take a 28-25 lead into the break.
"We did not have much enthusiasm and energy in the first half," Head Coach
Bryan Galuski said. "Methodist kept us on our heels, and we did a poor job of adjusting."
During the first seven minutes of the second period, the Monarchs kept the lead until the Pride used an 8-0 run to establish a 41-38 lead. Barnett and Miller each connected from long range to open the spurt before
Donavan Griffith capped it off with a tip-in in front of the rim.
Greensboro then established its largest lead of the game at 52-44, following a
Joseph Gatling three-ball, and the Pride would not look back as they pulled away for the victory.
"The guys did a great job of turning things around in the second half," Galuski said. "This is still a teaching process as we implemented a new philosophy tonight with the 'Five In-Five Out' lineups. We are trying to get the guys to play together, and each of them need to realize that when they are on the court that they all need to contribute as a whole unit. I do not know if this is a short change, or will be with us the rest of the season, but the overall idea of the philosophy is that we have to play together as a team.
"Even though we had some things slide by us tonight, I told the team following the game that I was happy with the way that they adjusted and came up with some big stops that helped push us out on top. We can take many positive things away from this game. We have to build on this win tonight as we go on the road against a tough Huntingdon College team."
Parris Scales finished with a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Joseph Gatling (12) and Griffith (11) also finished with double-digit points. Gatling and Barnett each passed for a team-leading three assists.
Tabias Hillard paced the Monarchs with 12 points, while Brandon Monk contributed 11 points.
The Greensboro College men's basketball team will return to action at 2 p.m. CST (3 p.m. EST) Saturday when they travel to take on the Hawks of Huntingdon College. For more information on Pride men's basketball, continue to follow
