GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College Volleyball team split their two matches on the opening day of play at the Greensboro College Volleyball Invitational on Saturday. The Pride topped the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe in their first match of the day, 3-0, before falling in straight sets to Swarthmore College to wrap up the day.
In the set against Oglethorpe, Greensboro found themselves trailing early but was able to use a 4-0 run to pull in front 8-6. Later in the set, the Pride would use an even larger run to extend their margin. With Greensboro leading 18-7, the Pride went on a 7-1 run to close out the set 25-18 behind the serve of
Darrian Bolt.
After taking the first set of the match, Greensboro was able to ride the momentum in the second set winning 25-22 before closing out the match with a 25-20 win in the third game.
Evan Sherer and
Meredith Summers each recorded seven kills in the match to pace the Pride attack. Summers also led the way in the dig column with 15. In the match,
Bari Tressler set 18 assists while
Darrian Bolt contributed 11.
In the final match of the day for the Pride, Swarthmore proved to be too much as Greensboro fell by scores of 25-10, 25-8, and 25-9.
Shayla Moss recorded a team high three kills while
Breana Baker,
Brandy Johnson,
Megan Baranko,
Tori Belcher, and
Vannesa Marquez each recorded one.
Breana Baker recorded 11 digs.
With the two match spilt, Greensboro's overall record goes to 3-4 on the season. The Pride will return to action tomorrow for the second and final day of the invitational. Greensboro will square off with West Virginia Wesleyan at 12:00 PM before wrapping up the day at 6:00 PM against Emory & Henry.
