GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College volleyball team completed play at the 2015 Greensboro College Volleyball Invitational on Sunday evening. The Pride opened the day with a hard faught defeat to West Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1, before dropping their final match 3-2 to Emory & Henry.
In the first set against the Bobcats, the Pride rallied back from a 4-0 deficit to take their first lead at 7-5. During the run that gained the lead for Greensboro,
Brandy Johnson and
Megan Baranko each recorded a kill. Over the final half of the set the two teams battled back and forth before Greensboro took a 1-0 lead by winning the set 28-26.
Once the Pride took the opening game, West Virginia Wesleyan was able to take the next three set by scores of 25-23, 25-14, and 25-21 to win the match 3-1.
Senior
Megan Baranko led the way with eight kills while
Evan Sherer and
Shayla Moss each added seven.
Meredith Summers,
Brandy Johnson, and
Marquenette Fuller was not far behind the leaders as they tallied six kills.
Summers and
Tori Belcher each recorded 13 digs in the defeat while
Bari Tressler and
Catherine Garcia combined to set 33 assists.
In their final match of the weekend, Greensboro fell in five sets to Emory & Henry. Greensboro won the first and third sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-18 but dropped the second and fourth sets to send the game into a fifth and final game.
In the fifth set, Greensboro jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but the Wasps were able to use a 5-0 run to take the lead at 5-2. Once Emory & Henry got the lead, the Pride could not get any closer than four points at 9-5 falling by a 15-9 mark.
Shayla Moss led the way with twelve kills in the match while
Evan Sherer and
Marquenette Fuller racked up seven kills each.
Tori Belcher led the way with 26 digs in the match.
"This weekend was a great experience bringing in competition form up and down the east coast," Head Coach
Kaci Pike stated. "This high level of competition that we saw this weekend will give us the experience we need going into conference play."
Following the cucluson of play, Meredih Summers was named to the Greensboro College Volleyball Invitational All-tournament team for her efforts throughout the weekend.
With the pair of defeats, Greensboro falls to 3-6 on the season. The Pride will return to action on Wednesday night to open USA South Athletic Conference play. Greensboro will welcome Mary Bladwin to town for a 6:30 PM start. For the latest on Pride athletics, continue to follow
