GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College baseball team (10-14, 9-11 USAS) recorded a double header sweep of Ferrum College (14-11, 11-9 USAS) on Saturday afternoon. After falling behind early in game one, Greensboro was able rally back for a 6-5 victory before taking game two 4-0.
Ferrum jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the top half of the fourth inning before Greensboro cut the deficit in half with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Brandon Soden got the Pride on the board with an RBI double before
Kyle Willard made the score 4-2 by scoring on a Panthers wild pitch.
Later in the game with the Pride still trailing 4-2,
J.P. Lisk pulled the Pride to within 4-3 with a RBI single down the right field line scoring
Andrew Toney.
After retiring the Panthers in the top half of the eighth inning of play, Greensboro then took their first lead of the game at 6-4 after scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Brandon Soden tied the game with a fielder's choice before first basemen
Andrew Toney plated Brain Robbett to give Greensboro the lead at 5-4. Following the RBI by Toney,
Andrew Hernandez scored Soden from third base with a sacrifice fly to left field pushing the Pride advantage to 6-4 heading to the top half of ninth inning.
Ferrum was able to push one final run across the plate before catcher
Braedon Jewett, who came in to catch the ninth inning, gunned out Lane Deaver at third base to secure the one run victory.
Freshman
Adam Murray tossed the first six innings for the Pride only giving up one earned run but did not factor into the decision. Will McGuire (1-2) came in behind Murray picking up the win before
Brian Robbett picked up his third save of the season.
Andrew Toney collected a team high two hits in the first game while J.P Lisk,
Jordan Powell,
Brian Robbett,
Kyle Willard, and
Brandon Soden each recorded one hit apiece.
"I am extremely excited by the way our team fought back to win this game," Pride Head Coach
Jonathan Nichols Stated. "We were able to bounce back from some early mistake and come out on top."
In the second game of the night, freshman pitcher
Josh Evans went the distance as the Pride topped the Panther 4-0.
Greensboro got all four of their runs in the first two innings of play.
In the bottom half of the first inning,
James Wilkins scored the game's first run on a wild pitch before Toney plated Robbett with his second RBI single of the day giving Greensboro a 2-0 lead.
After establishing the two run cushion, the Pride retired the Panthers in order before adding the final two runs of the game in the home half of the second inning.
Tyler Henderson led of the inning with a walk before coming in to score following a bases loaded walk by
Jordan Powell making the score 3-0. Following the walk by Henderson,
Brian Robbett recorded a sacrifice fly to center field scoring
Brandon Soden from third base for the game's final run.
In the nine innings on the mound, Evans recorded six strikeouts while allowing only five Panthers to reach the base.
James Wilkins recorded a team high two hits in game two while teammates
Brandon Soden,
Brian Robbett,
Andrew Toney,
Cody York, and
Tyler Henderson accumulated one hit each.
"Josh did an amazing job on the mound in game two," Nichols also stated. "He did not know that he was getting the start until about thirty minutes before the start. Josh came out and showed great command on the mound. It was also special to come out with two wins as we honored our fallen teammate
Cole Starke who we lost over the summer."
