Baseball Falls In Series Finale Against Monarchs

GREENSBORO, NC – The Pride baseball team (8-12, 7-11 USAS) closed out a three game set with conference foe Methodist University (17-7, 10-5 USAS) on Sunday afternoon. The Pride fell behind early, 3-0, but fell by a final score of 19-11.

The Monarchs jumped out to an early, 3-0, lead but Greensboro responded with three runs in the bottom half of the second inning to tie the game. The Pride loaded the bases to open the inning. Andrew Hernandez and Jay Cumbo plated a run each following sacrifice fly outs to cut the deficit to 3-2. Following the Cumbo sacrifice fly, Cody York plated Kristopher Taveras with a two out double to left center field to tie the game.

The Pride was then able to take the lead in their next trip to the plate. Jordan Powell led off the inning with a walk before coming in to score follow a Monarchs miscue off the bat of Zach Neumeister putting Greensboro on top 4-3.

However, Greensboro was not able to hold the lead as Methodist scored three runs in the top half of the fourth inning to retake the lead at 6-4.

After falling behind by the two run margin, Andrew Hernandez found himself in scoring position to lead off the bottom half of the inning with a double to center field. Hernandez then scored on another Methodist error to pull within one run at 6-5. Later in the inning Jay Cumbo, who reached on the error, scored from third base following another sacrifice fly to tie the game once again.

Once again Methodist was able to jump back out in front of the Pride, 19-6, following runs in the next five innings of play.

Greensboro tried to climb back in with a three run double off the bat of Kyle Willard to cut the deficit to 19-9. Following a Braedon Jewett walk, two batters later, Zach Neumeister plated two more runs with a triple to deep right field chipping the margin but could not get any closer falling 19-11.

Andrew Hernandez and Cody York each accounted for two hits in the contest. James Wilkins, York, Hernandez, and Cumbo each recorded one RBI while Kyle Willard contributed three RBIs.

Brian Robbett took the loss on the mound.

The Pride will return to action on Monday night against cross town rival Guilford College. The game will take place a New Bridge Bank Park with first pitch going out at 6:00 PM.
