GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College baseball team (8-11, 7-10 USAS) returned to Ted Leonard Park on Saturday afternoon to take on the Monarchs of Methodist University (16-7, 10-5 USAS) in a USA South Athletic Conference double header. The Pride dropped game one, 13-8, before dropping the second game, 7-6, in ten innings.
In the first game of the double dip, Methodist jumped on top of the Pride 7-0 through the first inning and half of play.
Greensboro then got on the board in the bottom half of the second inning of play. Andrew Toney led off the inning with a double to the right center gap to get into scoring position. Two batters later, Rhett Martin plated Toney with a single to left field cutting the deficit to 7-1.
The Monarchs then extended their lead over the next four innings of play.
With the Pride trailing 10-1 in the bottom half of the sixth inning, Greensboro was able to push three more runs across the plate in the home half of the sixth inning to pull within 10-4. Brian Robbett plated Cody York with a sacrifice fly before James Wilkins and Jordan Powell crossed the plate for the final two runs of the inning off the bat of Kyle Willard.
Later in the game, with the Pride trailing 13-4, Greensboro was able to push four final runs across before falling 13-8. Rhett Martin, Gwynn Thompson, and Cody York each recorded an RBI.
Jordan Powell and Cody York each collected three hits in the game while Andrew Toney added two hits of his own.
Kristopher Peeden took the loss on the mound.
In the nightcap of the double dip, Greensboro fell by a 7-6 score in ten innings.
After falling behind 1-0 early, the Pride was able to push across four runs over the course of the next two innings of play taking a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning of play. Cody York, Andrew Hernandez, and Zach Neumeister accounted for the four RBIs.
In the fifth inning of play, Methodist took the lead from Greensboro with four runs. Greensboro then responded back with two runs of their own retaking the lead at 6-5. Neumeister connected on a three two pitch and placed it into center field to score Andrew Hernandez from second base before James Wilkins recorded a sacrifice fly regain the lead.
Methodist was then able to tie the game in their next at bat before taking the win with a single run in the 10th inning. Greensboro had an opportunity to tie the game in the tenth inning when they left the bases loaded.
Dustin Minnick took the loss on the mound for the Pride after tossing the final four innings of play. Adam Murray started the game but did not factor into the decision.
James Wilkins went 3 of 5 in the second game at the plate while Andrew Hernandez, Brian Robbett, Andrew Toney, and Kyle Willard each recorded two hits.
The Pride will wrap up the three game set with the Monarchs on Sunday afternoon. The first pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
