MARYVILLE, TN – The Greensboro College baseball completed their three game set with Maryville College on Monday afternoon. The Pride found themselves in an early, 2-0, but fell by a 10-8 score despite a late inning rally.
The Scots were able to take and early lead by scoring two runs in the home half of the second inning of play.
However, Greensboro responded back with three runs in the top half of the fourth inning to take the lead at 3-2. In the fourth inning of play, Jay Cumbo plated both Brain Robett and Kyle Willard with a two out single to tie the game. Following the Cumbo single, Brandon Soden brought in Zach Neumeister to put Greensboro out in front by the narrow 3-2 margin.
After retiring the Scots in the bottom half of the fourth inning, Pride first basemen Andrew Toney connected on his first homer of the season plating Jordan Powell from second to put the Pride on top, 5-2.
Once Greensboro established the three run lead the Scots did not go away. Maryville then tallied seven runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to regain the lead 9-5.
Greensboro did not go away. Jay Cumbo singled in Gwynn Thompson before Brandon Soden doubled home two more runs to pull the Pride to within 9-8 heading into the home half of the seventh inning of play.
Following the three run inning, Greensboro was not able to get any closer as they fell by a 10-8 margin.
Jay Cumbo and Brandon Soden accounted for six of Greensboro's RBI total on the day while going a combined 5 of 9 from the plate. Kyle Willard also collected three hits on the day including one double.
Jeff Waring tossed five and two thirds innings on the mound for the Pride while striking out three in the loss. Will McGuire and Dustin Minnick accounted for the remaining two and third innings.
With the loss, the Pride fall to 5-4 overall on the season and 5-4 in USA South Athletic Conference play. The Greensboro baseball team will return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon when they travel across town to take on the Quakers of Guilford College. The first pitch is set for 3:00 PM.
