GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College Pride baseball team made their first appearance of the 2015 season on Friday afternoon at Ted Leonard Park. The Pride welcomed the Cougars of Averett University to town and fell by a 13-11 count despite a strong start.
The Cougars were able to jump out on top of the Pride early with four runs in the top half of the first inning.
However, Greensboro was able to spark a quick comeback in the bottom half of the inning scoring five runs to take a 5-4 lead. Jordan Powell recorded the first RBI of the night with a long double to the left field scoring J.P Lisk who led the game off with a single making the score 4-1 in favor of the Cougar.
Later in the bottom half of the inning, Zach Neumeister brought home Andrew Toney who recorded an RBI two batters earlier to make the score 4-3. Following the RBI groundout by Neumeister, Pride catcher Brian Robbett plated the final two runs of the inning with a double to center field.
After Averett was held scoreless in their next at bat before the Pride added another two runs in the bottom half of the inning to push their lead out to 7-4.
Over the course of the next four innings of play, Greensboro added on three more runs while the Cougars were able to pull within two runs at 10-8 heading into the top half of the eighth inning.
In the eigth inning of play, the Cougars were able to put the Pride in a 13-10 hole that they were not able to overcome falling by a 13-11 score.
"We did not have our best command on the mound today," Pride Head Baseball Coach Jonathan Nichols said following the game. "We left a few pitches up and they were able to capitalize on them. We have to come back out tomorrow afternoon and try to win the series."
Kristopher Peeden started the game on the mound for the Pride but did not factor into the descision. Jay Cumbo (0-1) took the loss for Greensboro while tossing one and one third inning.
The Pride baseball team was able to pound out 14 hits on the night. Jordan Powell led the way with three hits while Andrew Toney, Brian Robbett, and J.P Lisk each contributed two hits a piece.
With the loss, the Pride saw their record fall to 3-1 overall and 3-1 in USA South Athletic Conference play. The same two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon for a double header to wrap up the three game set. The first pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM.
