STANTON, VA – The Greensboro College volleyball team traveled to Stanton, Virginia for a pair of USA South Athletic Conference matches on Saturday afternoon. The Pride dropped a tight, 3-2, match against Piedmont College to open the day before defeating the host Squirrels of Mary Baldwin, 3-0, to end the day.
In the match against the Lions, Greensboro jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the opening set of the match 25-21.
After Greensboro took the opening set, Piedmont then won the next two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-18. The Pride was then able to force a decisive fifth set by squaring the match up at 2-2 with a 25-23 set four victory.
In the fifth set, Greensboro fell behind early and could not recover falling by a 15-6 score.
Shayla Moss (16) and
Evan Sherer (12) combined for 28 kills in the match to lead the way for the Pride. Breanan Baker recorded seven kills while
Meredith Summers contributed six kills.
Tori Belcher recorded a team high 30 digs while
Darrian Bolt and
Haley Bohrer combined for 45 assists.
After falling to the Lions, Greensboro then closed out the day by sweeping Mary Baldwin 3-0. Greensboro won the three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-21.
Marquenette Fuller,
Meredith Summers,
Brandy Johnson, and
Vannesa Marquez each recorded a team high five kills in the match.
"We had a great day of volleyball, showing what we are capable of regardless of the result," stated Head Coach
Kaci Pike. "We need to take the momentum of our win in to the remainder of the conference and finish strong."
