GREENSBORO, NC—Coming off of a tough weekend, the Pride volleyball team returned to action on Tuesday night against cross town rival Guilford College. This was the second time that the two clubs have met up this season, and Greensboro College was able to rally back for a 3-2 victory.
After Guilford College took the opening set of the match 25-19, the Pride was able to respond right back in the second set to even the match at 1-1. With the score at 11-9 in the second set, Greensboro was able to use a 3-0 run to extend their lead in the set to 14-10. Guilford College tired to climb back into the set again, but the Pride was able to hold on for the 25-19 win.
Once the Pride was able to even the match at 1-1, the Quakers were able to close out a back and forth third set 30-28 to put Greensboro down 2-1.
Once again trailing in the match, Greensboro College was able to tie the match at 2-2 and force a decisive fifth and final set. Guilford was able to jump out to an early 8-5 lead in the set, but the Pride was able rally back to tie the set at 17-17. Once Greensboro was able to tie the set, they continued to keep the set close before using a 6-0 run to close out for a 25-23 set win.
At the beginning of the fifth set of play, Greensboro College came out strong pulling out to an early 7-2 lead forcing the Quakers to call a time out. After the short break in action, Guilford was able to climb to within 7-5 before the Pride used another short run to extend their lead back to five at 10-5. The Quakers then rallied back to tie the desicive set at 12-12 to set up and exciting finish to the match. Greensboro College was able to score four of the final six points of the set pulling out the 16-14 set victory and 3-2 match win.
Liz Widenhouse led the way for the Pride with 27 kills, while Shayla Moss and Dallas Hasty contributed 15 and 11 kills respectively. Holly Anders had a team high 27 digs in the mach to go along with 30 assists by both Darrian Bolt and Bari Tressler.
With the win, the Pride's record improves to 12-6 overall. The Greensboro College volleyball team will return to action tomorrow night as they return to conference play at Averett University. The first serve is set for 7:00 PM.
