DANVILLE, Va.—The Greensboro College women's soccer team returned to conference action on Tuesday afternoon against the Cougars of Averett University. The Pride jumped out to an early lead, and was able to come away for a 4-3 victory.
Greensboro College was able to get on the board first in the 9th minute of play when Elizabeth Torres was able to convert on a long free kick putting the Pride on top 1-0 early. The score would remain the same until Allison Gibson was able to take a feed from Lauren Greeson to extend the Greensboro lead to 2-0 heading into the half time break.
After the 15 minute break, Averett was able to score the game's next three goals to take a 3-2 lead. Once Averett took the one lead, the Pride was able to respond back by finding the equalizer off the foot of Melanie Raton just five minutes later. With the score knotted at 3-3, Greensboro College was able to find another late goal to pull away for the 4-3 victory as Gibson found the back of the net for the second time in the contest.
The Pride held a 20-18 shot advantage in the contest with Melanie Raton leading the way with five shots. Lauren Greeson and Samara Alba also added four shots each.
Greensboro College's Jessica Thatcher picked up the victory in goal for the Pride while stopping eight Cougar shots. Kim Josephson took the loss for Averett.
With the win, the Pride women's soccer record improves to 4-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in USA South play. The Pride women's soccer team will return to action on Saturday afternoon as they take on the Avenging Angels of Meredith College in Raleigh. The first whistle is set for 2:00 PM.
