RALEIGH, NC---The Pride volleyball team dropped their final two matches of the 2014 regular season on Saturday afternoon. Greensboro fell to Meredith first 3-0 and then Methodist 3-1.
The Avenging Angels held a 10-7 lead before the Pride used a 6-1 run to take their first lead of the set at 13-11. Both teams fought hard with three ties at 14-14, 15-15, and 17-17 and then with the final tie at 23-23 but Meredith prevailed winning 25-23.
Meredith controlled the second set winning 25-13 and taking a 2-0 lead. In the third set, the score remained close at 9-8, but the Avenging Angels pushed their out to 17-8. The Pride used an 8-3 rally getting to within 21-17. However, Meredith prevailed 25-19.
Liz Widenhouse led the way with 12 kills and Shayla Moss was close behind with six kills. Bari Tressler passed for 13 assists. Dallas Hasty and Holly Anders had six digs apiece.
In the night cap against Methodist, the Pride held an early 7-6 lead before the Monarchs jumped out to their first lead at 13-9. The Monarchs did not relinquish their lead down the stretch winning 25-18.
Greensboro jumped out to 4-1 lead before Methodist battled back taking a 6-4 advantage. Methodist took their largest lead at 20-14 but the Pride fought back with a 6-2 run getting to within 21-19. Greensboro could not get any closer than two the remainder of the set falling 25-21.
Methodist started fast in the third taking a 4-0 lead but the Pride answered with a 5-0 run taking a 5-4 advantage. The Pride used another 4-0 push taking their largest lead of the match at 14-9. Greensboro did not allow the Monarchs back into the set eventually winning 25-21 but trailed 2-1 in the contest.
However, the fourth set was controlled by Methodist winning 25-15 and the match 3-1.
Widenhouse led the way again with 14 kills while Megan Baranko had 12 kills of her own. Tressler had a team high 24 assists. Widenhouse had 21 digs while Anders had 20.
With the two losses, Greensboro concludes the regular season with a 16-15 overall, and 8-11 in USA South play.
The Pride will now set their sights on the USA South tournament that begins on Friday November 7th in Martinsville Virginia. Greensboro will be the #5 seed and take on #1 seed Maryville at 1:00 P.M.
