Scott Neely enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Pride women’s soccer team in 2017.
Prior to joining the Greensboro College staff, Neely hung up his playing boots for coaching shoes after transferring from Wilmington College to Wright State University to focus more on his academic goals. During this time, he spent three seasons as the men’s goalkeeper coach at Fairmont High School in Kettering, OH, where for the first time in school history they earned a district chamionship. He then moved to Clemson, SC to pursue his master’s degree at Clemson University.
After moving to the City of Greensboro, he was the goalkeeper coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Southeast Guilford High School for six years before becoming the goalkeeper coach for the men’s soccer team at Page High School for two years.
Testing his goalkeeper training knowledge and experience gained throughout the years as a coach, Neely decided to put the player boots back on one last time and made the final squad of the Gate City Generals semi-professional soccer team at the age of 38 before the franchise folded.
In his first season at Greensboro College, Neely helped coach the Pride to a 10-7-3 record, while going 5-6-3 in USA South Athletic Conference play before recording the program’s first postseason victory in six seasons.
At the conclusion of the 2016 season, the Pride had three players named to the all-conference teams, while also having three players lead the USA South Athletic Conference in goals, assists, and points. The Pride also set program records in six categories including goals scored, goals per game, assist, points and points per game, while ranking third in NCAA Division III in goals scored.
Neely, a native of Dayton, OH, graduated from Wright State University in Dayton, OH with a BS in Urban Affairs. He later went on to earn his master’s degree from Clemson University with a degree in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management. Neely resides in Greensboro with his wife, Amy, and his two children.
