Maurice Torain is entering his fourth season at the helm as defensive coordinator at Greensboro College, Coach Torain's unit has produced 11 USA South All-Conference performers, along with the USA South Defensive Rookie of the Year and several top 10 nationally rankings in total takeaways, interceptions, and blocked kicks.
At Greensboro College:
2025: The defensive unit ranked first in the conference in pass defense only giving up 168.2 yards per game and ranked third in total defense with 312.9 yards per game while improving their scoring defense to 25.7 points per game while also finishing third nationally in blocked kicks with 7. The defensive unit had three USA South All Conference Selections.
2024: The defensive unit ranked second in the conference in redzone defense, fourth in the conference in pass defense and fourth in the nation in blocked kicks with 6. The defensive unit also notched another four USA South All Conference Selections.
2023: With four USA South All Conference Selections: Defensive unit ranked fifth in the nation in takeaways with 28, third nationally in blocked kicks with 7, and eighth in the nation in interceptions with 17. They also led the USA South Conference in interceptions, takeaways, defensive touchdowns, and blocked kicks. Coach Torain led a secondary that had three USA South All-Conference performers with one earning defensive rookie of the year honors. Three players from the unit lead the conference in interceptions. The unit finished the season tying two school records for interceptions in a season with 17 and most interceptions in a game (5) on two separate occasions.
2015: Coach Torain previously served as Greensboro College running backs coach.
Prior to Greensboro College:
Coach Torain came to Greensboro College after serving two years as the head football coach and defensive coordinator at John M. Morehead High School. While at Morehead, he developed a 2022 NCCA East/West All-Star selection, a 2021 Mid-State 2A Defensive Player of the Year and 12 Mid-State 2A All-Conference selections, while making the first round of the NCHSAA Playoffs.
Prior to Morehead, Coach Torian was the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach for Southeast Guilford High School where they were the 2021 Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference Champions, had the 2021 Mid-Piedmont 3A Defensive Player of The Year and four Mid-Piedmont 3A All Conference Defensive Players.
From 2018-2020 he served as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Northeast Guilford High School. During his tenure, Coach Torain helped develop a 2020 NCCA East/West All Star selection, 2019 Mid-State 3A Defensive Player of The Year, 2018 Mid-State 3A Defensive Player of The Year and Nine Mid-State 3A All Conference Defensive Players, while his defenses only allowed 45 rushing yards/game. Before going to Northeast Guilford, Coach Torian was the secondary coach at East Montgomery High School.
Torain earned his B.A. from Greensboro College in Exercise Science & Sports Studies. He’s also a licensed teacher in physical education. Torain and his wife Courtney, have a son Maverick (7).
