Matt Reed

Matt Reed is entering his fifth season as the Pride's pitching coach in 2019-2020 after joining the staff in December 2015.

Over his two-year tenure with the Pride, Reed's staff has dropped their team ERA by more than a point, while also lowering the opposing batting average against.

Reed came to the Pride from Pfeiffer University, where he served as an assistant coach for the past three seasons.

Coaching runs in Reed's family as his father, Marty, is the bullpen coach for the Atlanta Braves.

Over the years, Reed has had the opportunity to listen to pitching and bullpen coaches from five major-league teams speak about pitching, as well as Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax and current Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw.

Reed also coached in the Northwoods Collegiate Baseball League in 2015, helping pitcher Alex Hermeling not only win Northwoods League Pitcher of the Year honors but also sign a free-agent contract with the Dodgers.

Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Reed was a starting pitcher for the University of South Florida.

As a freshman and sophomore, Reed served as a mid-week starter before being named a weekend starter in his final two seasons. For his career, Reed posted a 14-8 record and a 4.50 ERA, with victories over the University of Florida, Louisville, and Miami. He twice led the conference in pickoffs, while also pitched two scoreless innings against the 2012 New York Yankees.

Reed was drafted, out of West Stanly High School in North Carolina, in the 44th round of the 2008 MLB draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

What they are saying about Coach Matt Reed

"Coach Reed has been a tremendous asset to our players and coaching staff over the past 3 1/2 years. His knowledge and work ethic will continue his reputation as one of the best young coaches in our game. He will be greatly missed in our program, and we wish him all the best in this next chapter of his coaching career." -Dusty Blake, Pfeiffer University Head Baseball Coach

"Matt was a player every coach loves to have on his team.  We never had to worry about him in the classroom or off the field.  Matt won many games for USF with his desire to out-pitch whoever he was going against, including the New York Yankees. There is no doubt that Matt will bring this type of mentality to the Greensboro pitching staff.  He will help Coach Maldonado put this program on the map." – Lelo Prado, head baseball coach at the University of South Florida, 2007-2014; associate athletics director, USF.
