2021: Became the school's all-time leader in caused turnovers. He played and started all 13 games where he tallied 34 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers with two goals and one assist. Matthews posted seven ground balls in the March 17 contest at Averett. He tallied two ground balls, three caused turnovers, and a goal in the march 7 matchup with Huntingdon. His efforts earned him All-USA South First Team honors at defense. Matthews was named to the Academic All-USA South Team for a record fifth time in his career.

2020: Played and started all eight games where he tallied 15 ground balls, 13 caused turnovers, and one assist. He posted three caused turnovers in the February 15 game with Virginia Wesleyan. Matthews tallied two ground balls and three caused turnovers in the March5 game with Chatham. Matthews was named to the Academic All-USA South Team.

2019: Played and started all 17 games where he posted 42 ground balls, 28 caused turnovers, three goals, and one assist. He collected six ground balls and one caused turnover in the March 2 game at Hampton. Matthews tallied four ground balls and three caused turnovers in the March 24 game against Huntingdon. His efforts earned him All-USA South Second Team honors at defense. Matthews was named to the Academic All-USA South Team.

2018: Played and started all 18 games where he totaled 34 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. He posted two ground balls and three caused turnovers in the February 26 game against Hanover. Matthews collected five ground balls and three caused turnovers in the March 31 game against Piedmont. He earned a spot on the All-USA South Second Team at defense. Matthews was named to the Academic All-USA South Team.

2017: Played and started all 16 games where he accumulated 47 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers. He posted four caused turnovers in the February 25 contest with Virginia Wesleyan. Matthews collected a career-high nine ground balls with one caused turnover in the April 5 contest against Brevard. Matthews was named to the Academic All-USA South Team.

Prep: He was a part of the lacrosse team at Southwest Guilford High School. While attending Southwest, he earned the Lacrosse all conference and all area senior award.

Personal: He is the son of Donnie and Paige Matthews.
