RALEIGH, N.C. — Greensboro College volleyball (10-2, 2-1) defeated Mary Baldwin (1-8, 0-1) 3-0 on Saturday, taking the sets 25-15, 25-19, 25-17.
After Greensboro moved ahead 2-1,
Morgan Mayfield's kill returned serve and opened a 13-0 run, with
Madison Bozarth serving the final 12 points of the stretch. Bozarth had two aces during the run and set kills by
Sydney Beck,
Dilynn Norris and
Larkin Baxley as Greensboro pushed the lead to 15-1 before Hayley DeShazo ended it with a kill for Mary Baldwin. Mary Baldwin traded points through the middle of the set and cut into the gap with Morgan Flaherty's kill and back-to-back Alexa Ammerman aces to make it 22-14, but
Payton Bell's kill, a Mary Baldwin bad set and a service error after one more Flaherty kill finished Greensboro's 25-15 set win.
In the second set, Greensboro trailed 9-7 before a Baxley kill, a Mary Baldwin attack error and a Beck kill helped move Greensboro in front 10-9, and Greensboro later extended the lead to 15-11 on Beck's kill and another Mary Baldwin error. Mary Baldwin answered with seven straight points, using kills from Morgan Flaherty, Delaney Bolbach and Hayley DeShazo to take an 18-15 lead. Greensboro came back with a seven-point run of its own, beginning with an
Enjoli Allen kill and continuing with
Breckyn Bahr serving through kills by Baxley and Mayfield, a Baxley-Allen block and Mary Baldwin errors for a 22-18 advantage. After Mary Baldwin stopped the run,
Payton Wright and Baxley put down kills, and Baxley teamed with
Alison Gallo on the closing block to finish Greensboro's 25-19 set win.
In the third set, Greensboro led 2-0 early before Mary Baldwin scored three straight, including two Morgan Sher service aces, to move ahead 3-2. Norris tied it with a kill, and after a 4-4 score, Beck's kill, Bahr's ace and two Mary Baldwin attack errors pushed Greensboro in front 8-4. Greensboro stretched the margin from 9-6 to 13-6 behind two
Abigail Leo kills, an
Emory Johnson kill and a
Skylar Rokov kill, but Mary Baldwin later used three Greensboro attack errors to get back within 17-13 and then closed to 19-16 on a Sarah Buchy ace. Wright stopped that stretch with a kill, Mayfield added an ace, and Greensboro finished the set with a Rokov kill and Leo kill for a 25-17 win.
