Volleyball Falls in Season Opener to Washington & Lee

Greensboro, NC — Greensboro College volleyball (0-1) lost its first match of the 2026 campaign on Tuesday to Washington & Lee 3-0 (1-0) on Tuesday.

Greensboro answered a 3-0 start by the Generals in set one by taking five of the next six points, with Abigail Leo contributing three kills and a block as Greensboro moved ahead 5-4. The set was tied at 10-10 before Washington & Lee created separation, though Greensboro later put together four straight points from 21-13 to 21-17 behind kills from Payton Wright and Dilynn Norris, and a Morgan Mayfield ace. The Generals finished out the set 25-19.

In the second set, Greensboro answered an 18-13 deficit with five straight points, getting a Wright kill to regain serve before Lily Burson served four consecutive points, including an ace that tied the set at 18-18. The set was tied again at 20-20, but the Generals scored the final five points to take it 25-20.

Greensboro opened the third set with kills from Leo and Payton Shiflet on the way to a 3-0 lead, but Washington & Lee worked back to tie it at 6-6. After Greensboro pulled even again at 10-10, Washington & Lee scored six of the next seven points to move in front 16-11. Leo added three more kills later in the set, but Greensboro fell 25-18.

Leo led Greensboro with 10 kills, hit .364 and added two solo blocks. Mayfield recorded 21 digs, four assists, one kill and one service ace. Larkin Baxley finished with 21 assists and added a solo block. Shiflet tallied nine kills and nine digs.

Up Next:
The Pride will travel to Averett University to play Guilford College on Friday, Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. followed by a match against Roanoke College at 6 pm in Danville, Virginia.
