Misenheimer, NC - Greensboro College Softball played in game one of the USA South Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon and took down Southern Virginia 1-0 behind a complete game shutout by senior
Raina Hampel.
Hampel turned in a gem, going all seven innings with six strikeouts and only allowing three hits. The win improves Hampel's record to 7-3 on the season.
Offensively, both teams remained scoreless until the fifth inning. With two outs,
Anna Frazier stole second base and advanced to third on an error. Then,
Olivia Hyatt hit an RBI single that would prove to be the game-winner.
In the seventh, SVU had a runner on second base with no outs, but Hampel would get a flyout, a strikeout, and then a foul out to end the game. Greensboro has now defeated SVU in two straight seasons in the conference tournament.
The win advances Greensboro to the winner's bracket on Friday. They will play the #1 seed Pfeiffer at 1:00 pm. Watch live at greensborocollegesports.com.
