Softball Loses Two Heartbreakers to #15 Christopher Newport on Friday

Newport News, VA - Greensboro College Softball (9-9) traveled to #15 Christopher Newport (14-4) on Friday afternoon and lost in walk-off fashion in both games. Game one went to CNU 10-9 while they took game two in eight innings 7-6.

Game One:
CNU scored the first three runs of the game early to jump out 3-0. Greensboro scored twice in the third thanks to a Raven Taylor two-run homer to trim the score to 3-2. CNU would score the next five runs to take an 8-2 lead, but the Pride would come from behind late to make this one a classic.

Greensboro scored two in the sixth and then five in the seventh to take a 9-8 lead. With the bases loaded in the seventh, Jordyn Tong hit a grand slam to give the Pride the lead. Howver, with two outs and Greensboro ahead 9-8 in the bottom of the seventh, CNU would double home the tying run, and then score the winning run on an error.

The Pride offense totaled 11 hits, with Anna Frazier, Tong, Taylor, and Kenly Brown all hitting homers. Tong would total 5 RBI. Ella Ebert started in the circle and went 4.0 innings, giving up 6 runs, with just 3 being earned.

Game Two:
It was another comeback for Greensboro in game two as they found themselves down 3-0 early once again. However, a two-run third got the Pride back within a run. With CNU ahead 5-2, Greensboro scored a run in the fifth on an RBI by Alexis Lynch and scored twice in the sixth to tie the game. Jordyn Tong homered once again and Olivia Hyatt doubled home the tying run to even the score 5-5.

The teams would go to extras, and Tong came through once more, this time with an RBI double to give Greensboro a 6-5 lead. Unfortunately, with no outs in the bottom half of the inning, CNU would hit a two-run home run to walk off Greensboro in the eighth.

Raina Hampel pitched a solid 4.0 innings out of the bullpen, giving up 3 hits, 1 earned run, and striking out 3.

Notes:
- Greensboro hit 5 home runs between the two games.
- Tong's grand slam in game one was the second of her career.
