Men's Lacrosse Takes Down Oglethorpe in Season Opener

Atlanta, GA - The Greensboro College Men's Lacrosse team (1-0) opened the 2026 season with an 18-8 win over Oglethorpe (0-1) on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Pride were led by Alex Mattoon and newcomer Seth Woods, who both scored 5 goals. They both also had 1 assist each, while Woods had 6 ground balls while Mattoon had 5.

The Petrels got out to a 3-2 lead after the first quarter, but the Greensboro offense turned up the heat in the second, scoring 3 goals of their own and took a 5-4 halftime advantage.

They then took command in the third quarter, scoring 5 more goals. After Oglethorpe scored the first goal of the second half, Greensboro scored 5 straight to take a 10-5 advantage. Justin Barry and DiMaggio Wilson each scored 2 goals in the period, while Chas Gilroy scored 1.

The Pride then put the game away with an 8-goal fourth quarter. Woods would score 4 of his 5 goals in the final period, and Mattoon scored 3.

Head Coach Nate Bates said after the game, "I'm proud of the resiliency of the guys tonight. We jumped out early and then they came back and had us down by several before we dug in. It's always tough in the first game of the year because there isn't film to prep well, so we just had to focus on us and do our type of things. It was bumpy at times and high level at others. We will find some consistency as we play more. However, I'm proud of them for fighting through mistakes and finding a way to pull away at the end. It was a good first win for us in 2026."

Notes:
- Greensboro has won their last six meetings against Oglethorpe.
- Quinton Solomon led the team with 11 ground balls.
- Cedrick Crenshaw Jr led the team with 3 caused turnovers in his first career game.
- Woods' 5 goals ties a career high.
