Pride Earn 3-1 Road Win Over Brevard, Earn Program's 900th Win

BREVARD, N.C. — Greensboro College volleyball (16-2, 7-1) defeated Brevard College (7-10, 4-3) 3-1 on Wednesday, winning 25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16. Greensboro used an 8-0 run in the fourth set after the score was 12-12 and finished with 49 kills, 10 aces and 81 digs. The win was also the 900th victory in program history.

The opening set moved back and forth early before Brevard moved in front 9-8 on an Abigail Leo attack error. Leo answered with a kill to tie it at 9-9, and Greensboro added five more points on Emory Johnson's serve, including two Payton Wright kills and Leo block, to move ahead 14-9. Brevard cut the margin to 14-12, but Greensboro pushed back to 16-12 and later used Morgan Mayfield's service run, which included an ace, to build a 23-13 lead. After Brevard scored three straight points, Larkin Baxley put down a kill and served the closing ace for a 25-16 Greensboro win in the set.

After Brevard scored the first two points, Greensboro moved in front with kills by Payton Shiflet and Baxley, and Baxley's serving stretch helped the Pride build an 8-3 lead with an ace and kills from Shiflet and Skylar Rokov. Brevard worked back into the set, using a four-point run on Ariel Rieck's serve to tie it at 11-11 before the teams traded points to 15-15. Brevard then scored five straight points to move ahead 20-15, but Greensboro stayed in the set with a Madison Bozarth ace, a Dilynn Norris kill and a Brevard attack error that cut the margin to 22-20. Grace Young later served an ace to bring Greensboro within 23-22, but Brevard took the final two points to close the set 25-22.

Brevard built an 8-5 lead in the third set before Greensboro worked back, tying it at 9-9 on a Shiflet kill and moving ahead 12-9 after a Baxley kill and Young service ace. Brevard closed the gap to 16-15 with help from a Bailey Blackmon kill, a block by Emma Fontana and a Rowan Raney kill, but Norris answered with a kill and Greensboro pushed back to 21-16 behind three straight Leo kills. After Brevard pulled within 21-18, Greensboro finished the set with four straight points, getting a Wright kill, two Morgan Mayfield kills and a Baxley kill to take the set 25-18.

Greensboro scored the first two points of the fourth set, but Brevard answered with seven straight, including an Emma Fontana ace and two Bailey Blackmon blocks, to move ahead 7-2. Greensboro responded with four in a row on a Brevard service error, a Baxley ace, a Norris-Rokov block and a Shiflet kill, then later pulled even at 9-9 after kills by Rokov and Wright and a Rokov block. After the set was tied 12-12, a Brevard attack error put Greensboro in front, and Young served the next seven points as Shiflet had three kills and Leo added two blocks and a kill during the run to 20-12. Brevard cut the margin to 20-15, but Leo answered with a kill, Mayfield served an ace, and Norris added a late kill before a Brevard attack error closed Greensboro's 25-16 set win.

Greensboro finished with 49 kills to Brevard's 38 and hit .135, compared with .078 for Brevard. The visitors also had a 10-4 advantage in service aces with three service errors compared with 11 for Brevard, while Mayfield recorded 27 digs as Greensboro finished with an 81-63 dig edge. Greensboro also put together an 8-0 fourth-set run from a 12-12 tie to a 20-12 lead.
