Football Earns Homecoming Win Over SVU Saturday Night

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro College football (2-2, 1-0) defeated Southern Va. (1-3, 0-1) 42-20 on Saturday at Pride Field. Greensboro answered a 20-7 second-quarter deficit by scoring 35 unanswered points across five scoring drives. Greensboro finished with 364 passing yards and four passing touchdowns, while the defense held Southern Va. scoreless in the second half with five sacks and two interceptions. The win moved Greensboro to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Greensboro had 9:15 of possession in the first quarter and produced 74 passing yards, with Cameron Turner's 53-yard touchdown pass to Camron Torrence-Kelly accounting for its score. The Greensboro defense recorded four tackles for loss and one sack while holding Southern Va. to 0-for-3 on third down, but Southern Va. converted one of two fourth downs and tied the quarter at 7-7 on a touchdown with six seconds left.

Greensboro held the ball for 11:14 of the second quarter and produced seven first downs, going 2-for-5 on third down and 1-for-2 on fourth down. Turner threw two touchdown passes in the quarter, including a 53-yarder to KJ Brown, while Southern Va. answered with 113 passing yards and two touchdowns on 5-of-7 passing. TJ Croom's interception set up Greensboro's 13-play, 60-yard drive, which ended with Turner's 7-yard touchdown pass to Jace Jackson and Jacob Cook's PAT for a 21-20 lead at halftime.

Greensboro did its damage through the passing game in the third quarter, throwing for 127 yards while being held to two rushing yards. Turner's 85-yard touchdown pass to KJ Brown and Jacob Cook's PAT accounted for the quarter's only points, giving Greensboro a 28-20 lead entering the fourth quarter. Southern Va. finished the quarter with 24 rushing yards and 41 passing yards, converted 1 of 5 third downs and was stopped on its lone fourth-down try.

Greensboro outscored Southern Va. 14-0 in the fourth quarter to finish a 42-20 win, getting a 7-yard touchdown run from Turner and a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown from Jakari Holloman. Southern Va. had 74 passing yards and six first downs in the quarter, but Greensboro held it to minus-15 rushing yards, 1-for-6 on third down and 0-for-3 on fourth down while adding two sacks, four pass breakups and five quarterback hurries.

Turner completed 21 of 33 passes for 364 yards and four touchdowns, setting a new career-high in passing yards, and added 22 rushing yards and a touchdown on six carries. KJ Brown caught four passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns, setting a career-high in receiving yards. Holloman recorded six tackles and returned an interception 23 yards for a touchdown. Ziere Ray finished with six tackles and two sacks. Jay Law recorded a season-high total of 10 tackles.

After Greensboro opened with a 53-yard touchdown from Turner to Torrence-Kelly, Southern Va. moved in front 20-7, setting up Greensboro's extended response. Greensboro scored 35 unanswered points across five scoring drives, beginning with a one-play, 53-yard Turner touchdown pass to KJ Brown. Later before halftime, Greensboro capped a 13-play, 60-yard touchdown drive after an interception takeaway, and Turner connected with Brown again in the third quarter on an 85-yard touchdown during a two-play, 19-second drive. Greensboro also converted fourth downs in Southern Va. territory and kept Southern Va. out of the end zone on downs at the Greensboro 13 late in the game.

Greensboro's passing game supplied 364 yards and four touchdowns, with Turner completing 21 of 33 passes for a career-high of 364 yards without an interception. Brown had four catches for a career high 153 yards and two touchdowns, while Greensboro held possession for 34:32. Defensively, Greensboro recorded five sacks, two interceptions and eight quarterback hurries, while Southern Va. finished 3-for-16 on third down and 1-for-6 on fourth down.

Jay Law led the team in tackles with 10, while Ziere Ray totaled 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss. Charlie Rogers had 3.5 tackles for loss while TJ Croom had 3 pass break-ups.
