Greensboro, NC-
Anna Frazier (softball) and
Zack Bird (baseball) have earned Greensboro Pride Athletes of the Week for the culmination of the regular season for spring sports.
Frazier had an incredible week both at the plate and in the circle, delivering a .350 average (7-for-20) with two doubles, six RBI, five runs scored, and a stolen base over the span of six games. In a week of big offensive performances by the softball team, Frazier stood out for her consistent production. In addition to her prowess at the plate, she pitched 16.2 innings over the week, allowing just three earned runs (1.26 ERA), while allowing just 12 hits and striking out 10. In Greensboro's dramatic extra-innings victory over William Peace in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, Frazier went the distance, allowing just two runs over her eight innings of work.
On the year, the junior is matching her batting average from this past week of .350, while ranking second on the team with 12 doubles and having driven in 27 runs. In addition, she is a perfect 17-for-17 on stolen base attempts. In the circle, her 2.90 ERA paces the team, as does her .257 opponents' batting average, as she has fashioned an 8-3 record over 17 appearances (13 starts), going the distance four times.
Softball travels to Rocky Mount to compete in the USA South Softball Conference Tournament this week as the #3 seed.
As for Bird, the talented left-handed hurler bounced back in a huge way against N.C. Wesleyan in the opening game of last weekend's series. After Southern Virginia tagged him for eight runs (seven earned) in his previous outing, Bird returned to form against the Battling Bishops, allowing just a single run over six frames, striking out five and earning his third win of the season. Greensboro has won each of Bird's last five starts, and outside of the SVU hiccup, he has allowed just four earned runs in 23.2 innings over that span (1.52 ERA, only rising to a still-strong 3.49 ERA with the SVU game factored in).
For the regular season, Bird sported a 3-1 record with a 5.22 ERA in nine appearances (six starts) while fanning 31 hitters in 39.2 innings. He figures to play a prominent role for the Pride in the postseason, where Greensboro hosts Bracket 2 in the USA South Baseball Conference Tournament at McCrary Park in Asheboro beginning on Thursday. The Pride, as the #2 overall seed and bracket host, will play the second game of the day.
