Greensboro, NC - Softball's
Raina Hampel and baseball's
Jake Duffy have been named this week's Greensboro Pride Athletes of the Week.
Hampel, the junior from Concord, earned her second Athlete of the Week distinction by appearing in a trio of Greensboro's contests last week. She went 3-0 with a 0.64 ERA while just four hits and whiffing four in 11 innings.
Against Southern Virginia, Hampel pitched the final two innings of game one, not allowing a hit and was the beneficiary of
Sydney Harris' walk-off double as the Pride won a back-and-forth affair. She got the start in game two, going the distance, and allowed just one run on two hits in six innings while again earning the victory. On Saturday against Salem, Hampel made the start in game one, going three innings and allowing just two hits as the Pride rolled 11-2.Â
Hampel is now 11-4 this year with a stellar 2.87 ERA, which ranks second on the team. Her 11 victories tie Meredith's Lilly Davis for second in the USA South.
Duffy had a strong weekend for the Pride baseball team as Greensboro took two of three from Southern Virginia. Making three starts in right field, Duffy went 6-for-10 with a triple, four runs scored, and six RBI. In the series opener, Duffy was 2-for-3 with four runs driven in. He followed it with another two-hit performance the next day, which included his triple and two more RBI.
It has been quite the turnaround for the senior this month. Hitting, .083 after Greensboro's loss on April 1st, Duffy has caught fire, raising his average this season to .311 with a blistering .393 month of April (13-for-33), while driving in nine of his season total of 10. His resurgence was kick-started against Pfeiffer on April 4th, when his walk-off single gave the Pride a 10-9 win.
