Men's Hoops Falls in Overtime Thriller to Open Season

Greensboro, NC - Greensboro College Men's Basketball (0-1) took on Heidelberg University (1-0) in the season-opener on Saturday afternoon inside Hanes Gym and fell 77-74 in overtime.

Heidelberg took control throughout the first half, pulling away to a 44-26 halftime advantage. They shot over 50% from the floor in the half and went 5-11 from long range.

However, the second half was the complete opposite, as the Pride erased that 18-point halftime deficit. After shooting 29% in the first half, Greensboro's offense came alive and shot 51% in the second half. With 5:26 to play, Greensboro took a 61-60 lead, their first lead since the opening basket of the game.

The teams swapped the lead multiple times as the second half went on. With just over 30 seconds remaining, Greensboro held a one point advantage. With just 8 seconds left, Heidelberg drew a foul and would hit one of two free throws to tie the game. Greensboro had a chance to win it before buzzer, but a Jalen Thorns jumper fell just short and the teams headed to overtime.

Heidelberg jumped out to a three point advantage early in the overtime period, and with under 30 seconds left had a one point lead over the Pride. With 6 seconds remaining, Marcos Vazquez hit a jumper to extend the lead to three points again, and a potential game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer by Will Gray fell short as Heidelberg would come away victorious.

Senior newcomer Nygie Stroman had a big game for Greensboro, scoring 24 points in his team debut. Gray had 17 points with 10 assists and 11 rebounds, completing a triple-double in his first game as a member of the program. Thorns scored 11 points with 3 assists while DJ Jackson scored 10.

Greensboro is back at home on Monday when they host St. Mary's Coillege (MD) at 6:30 pm.
