Greensboro, NC - In a valiant effort Saturday night, Greensboro College Men's Soccer (8-6-4, 3-3-1) fell to Methodist (6-3-10, 1-0-6) 1-0 in overtime of the USA South Conference Tournament First Round.
The match was a hard fought battle between two teams that tied 0-0 in their lone regular season game. Both teams came close to breaking the tie in regulation, but close misses and superb saves by the keepers kept the match scoreless through the first 90 minutes.Â
In the overtime period, the Monarchs took advantage of a corner kick opportunity less than two minutes in and scored to win the match and advance to the USA South Conference Tournament Semifinals.
In goal,
Alvaro Hermosa made multiple outstanding saves to keep the game alive for Greensboro, and totaled 7 saves on the night.
Despite the loss, it was an incredible turnaround season for the men's soccer program. The team combined to win two games the past two seasons, and in 2025 won 8 games and hosted the first round match in the conference tournament.Â
Multiple freshman helped lead the charge for the Pride, including
Gustav Ohman,
Jade Diane, and Kalle Hermanson. Junior keeper
Alvaro Hermosa had an outstanding season in goal for the Pride, while first year head coach
Jacob Weinshank brought a new energy and culture to the program.Â
