Pride Football Can’t Overcome Tough Third Quarter in Loss to SVU

Buena Vista, VA - Despite a late rally, the Greensboro College Football team (1-3, 0-1) fell on the road at Southern Virginia (4-0, 1-0), 35-22 Saturday afternoon.

Up 9-7 at halftime thanks to a Chase Altis touchdown pass to Shamar Privette, the Pride ran into trouble when the Knights scored 21 unanswered points (including a 15-0 third quarter). First, Knights quarterback Devin Watson threw a 70-yard touchdown pass, and the SVU defense also got in on the action when Tony Napper Jr. intercepted Altis and returned it for a touchdown.

Down 28-7 midway through the fourth quarter, Greensboro mounted a charge, with both Camron Torrence-Kelly and Privette rushing for short touchdowns to cut the deficit to 28-22. However, moments after the Privette touchdown, Watson (19-35, 291 yards, 2 touchdowns) connected on his second long touchdown pass of the game to pull ahead by two scores with under three minutes to play.

Altis passed for a career-high 349 yards on 26-39 passing with a touchdown and 2 interceptions, highlighted by a 78-yard strike to KJ Brown (6 catches, 125 yards). Privette added six catches for 81 yards and a score, while Tre Jones hauled in six passes as well.

Greensboro out-gained Southern Virginia 443 to 334, recorded more first downs (21 to 15), and had a higher third down conversion percentage (44% to 33%), but the Pride continued to be plagued by costly turnovers, now having committed 15 in four games (including 2 on Saturday).

Greensboro returns home next week to take on Huntingdon at 1:00 pm on October 11th.
